A couple weeks ago Andrew and I headed to Calgary for what we liked to call our last vacation of summer (so sad!) Our newly engaged friends Jenn and Eric live out there and invited us out for a long weekend. It worked out well because we were also able to see Andrew’s cousin Michelle and some old friends from University.
Andrew and I had only been to Calgary once prior to this trip and both times we were much younger (he with his family when he was a teenager and me with a bunch of newly legal drinking age girlfriends for the Calgary Stampede), so it was fun (and quite different) to experience it together as a couple.
Downtown Calgary seemed pint-size compared to Vancouver but on a weekday night there was plenty of people to see and things to do. These are some of the attractions we recommend!
1.Check out beautiful Central Memorial Park – This park is right in the heart of downtown Calgary and features the Calgary Public Library, a fountain, statues and park benches. It was such a nice break from the constant construction of downtown where skyscrapers seem to be going up on every block.
2. Walk down Stephens Ave. – Though I have been told by the locals that Stephens Ave. is a ghost town on the weekend, its hard to believe on a weekday. Everyone was out walking around on this pedestrian only street and every patio was packed with well dressed white collar workers enjoying happy hour.
3. Visit the Calgary Tower – The glass floor at the Calgary Tower reminds me of the large glass floor at the Sears Tower in Chicago. Super creepy, but a fun way to view the city from above.
4. Eat and drink at CRAFT Beer Market – With over 100 Beers on tap this is one pub/restaurant that you have to go to. Try the fish tacos– they are delicious! Good news is they are also opening a CRAFT Beer Market in Vancouver!
5. Try a Quad Mojito at The Rhino – The patio at The Rhino was the perfect place to grab a drink after a hot summer day walking around town, but the drink we ordered was by far the largest one I had ever had. The Quad Mojito–is exactly how it sounds– 4 shots of rum in one giant mason jar. Let’s just say I didn’t need to order a second.
We’re going back to Calgary next summer for Jenn and Eric’s wedding! Congrats you two!!! So we have to ask, are there any attractions or things to do that you would recommend?
